Art Makeovers can be inexpensive, fun and risk free. Here are some examples.

Change the entire look of a piece and the entire room can change to better represent your style. These three examples are very different in style, but yielded equally satisfying results in the rooms where they were placed. Most of these were done as part of a home staging to sell a home, but you can absolutely do this in your own home.

Take existing art and change it up using paint, fabric, markers, or any other materials of your choice, to create pieces that are a better fit for your current style goals. And have fun doing it!

Taking existing art and decor and give it a facelift can be incredibly satisfying. Quite often, we have art in our home that we’ve grown out of, or was never really a good representation of our style. If you’re considering replacing it anyway, why not take a shot at creating something lovely, and save the cost of an all new piece? And what a treat to be able to say you did it yourself. This painting, above, was an estate sale find of a dark, moody forest scene was painted on textured finish, on a wood panel of about 24″x72″. A good looking piece I used once and then reinvented for a different project. The more cheerful, brightly colored painting was kept by the owners. By following the general lines of the tree branches and leaves, the refined look is created by letting the existing art guide the changes.

This next item, a newly purchased abstract art piece was improved upon by following the same style and expanding the color palette. I was called in to do a low budget update and makeover to a very needy corporate townhouse used for visiting employees. This piece was part of that makeover, to be placed above the existing sofa. Starting with a piece purchased from Ross, I added more color, toned down the gold, and added texture with splashes of dark tones, elevating the piece and allowing it to tie in better with the existing furniture and the new pieces I had brought in.

This third piece, below, was created using items I had on hand, for a home staging. The piece was sold with the house. The foundation of this piece is a starched off-white bedsheet stretched around, then glued and stapled at the back to a cardboard shipping box of size about 3″Dx36″x36″. Burlap was added, cut in the shape of leaves. The flower was made of twine and button. Then brown tones of paint were used to create the swatches that give an impression of wood grain. This playful piece is one I wish I had kept. But I’m happy to know it made someone else happy.
